An Orthodox Mission to the people of Amherst, Virginia and the greater Lynchburg metropolitan area.

Service Announcement

For May 31st only, we’ll be having services starting at 11 AM instead of our normal 10 AM start time.

Welcome!

We are a new Orthodox Christian mission in Amherst, Virginia and the surrounding areas. We’re under the jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) and are mission effort of St. Cyprian of Carthage Orthodox Church in Richmond. Our prayer services are conducted in English. Christ the Saviour has secured the historic, beautiful Mills Chapel on the scenic Sweet Briar College campus for Sunday and weekday feast day services throughout Lent and beyond.

Everyone is welcome (service times available here). If you’d like to spread the word, here’s a flyer to distribute.

Inaugural Catechumen / Inquirers Class Starting on May 6th!

We had a tremendous response to our Inquirers Q&A event on April 26ᵗʰ. As a result, beginning on the first Wednesday in May we’ll have our inaugural class.

What do I need to bring?

Just yourself. You might want to also bring a notebook and pen. Definitely bring any questions you might have about Orthodoxy. There’s a lot time made available for questions.

What does it cost?

Absolutely free. We will have snacks, but if you wanted to bring some to share…

Do I need to “sign up” first?

It’s not mandatory, but if you want to give us a heads-up, please use the contact page or email us.

What should I expect?

As with all things in Orthodoxy, we begin with prayer. Here’s the schedule:

  • 7 PM - Vespers - This is the evening service of the Church. We get the word from the Latin, who in turn got it from the Greek “Esperinós” (Ἑσπερινός). You might also hear it called “Večernja” (Вечерня). They all mean the same thing - “evening.” Just come in, grab a service book if you’d like, and stand wherever you’re comfortable.

  • 8 PM- Class - Class might imply a stuffy lecture to you. That’s not what this is. We discuss a topic, people ask questions, and then we decide what the next week’s subject will be. There is some assigned reading, but we’re happy to have you drop in as you can.

  • Afterward - Q&A - There are always people who have questions not suited to the larger group or so off-topic they are better asked after we’ve met. Just find the priest afterward and ask away!
